Frequently Asked Questions
What is this research all about?
We have developed a prototype of a web mobile assessment tool to help teachers save time and increase student motivation. So we are providing teachers in grades 6-10 the opportunity to test the tool through a UPEI research study. The total time required is 1.5 hours by teachers and 1.75 hours by their students. In appreciation for participation, teachers will receive a $50 Amazon gift card and students will receive a chance to win a $25 Amazon Card and 1 of 3 rewards valued of $100-$300.
What is Study Smart or this assessment tool?
Study Smart is an online diagnostic assessment tool that was developed to help teachers save time and increase student motivation.
It saves teachers time in identifying core math and literacy skills, understanding how individual students learn, planning lessons and building student relationships. This is achieved with a class profile, personalized learning plans, universal instructional strategies and easily implementable lesson plans.
Students are also motivated to learn by having voice, choice and accountability of their learning. This is achieved by students directly sharing with their teachers their strengths, needs, interests and learning preferences through a series of short quizzes and engaging activities.
Is there a limited number of people you are looking for?
Although we would like to test the tool with as many teachers and students as possible, there may be a limit based on participant criteria and the number of responses we receive. If we get more interested participants than we need, we will consider responses based on first come, first serve.
When is the study?
The first phase is in progress now and the second phase will be conducted between September-November 2024. The study will involve any students in the class who would like to participate. It will require 1.75 hour of the student’s time to complete the assessment at home and 1.5 hour of the teacher’s time to review the results of the assessment and participate in an online interview.
Do I need approval to participate or do you have approval?
We already have approval from the PEI Public School Branch and some of the Anglophone Districts in New Brunswick. We will be requesting approval from other districts in New Brunswick that have interested teachers. After a teacher expresses interest, the researcher will also be contacting the teacher’s principal to get final approval.
Can I test the tool without being part of the research?
We would like to have the tool available to everyone, but it is important that we test it first and make refinements based on the feedback of the research participants. Since the research only takes 1.5 hours of your time and you are compensated with a $50 Amazon Gift Card, you will benefit more by being one of the first to officially try the tool. However, if you would prefer to wait until the research is over, we can also contact you once the tool is ready for public distribution if you provide us with your contact information.
