PREPARE

  • Gather Materials- Paper, pen/pencil or audio recorder if voice brainstorming
  • Seek Support- Seek support from your teacher, tutor, parent or peer as needed.

APPLY

  1. When you have to start an essay or writing assignment, sometimes starting is the hardest part. Start with some general brainstorming using the following steps:
    1. Consider the general purpose of the topic and try to answer the 5 W questions (who, what, when, where, why)
    2. Allow as many ideas to come out of your head without thinking about them or whether they are right or wrong.
    3. If you are a visual learner, start by drawing an image in the middle of the page and then draw branches from the image to brainstorm your ideas.
    4. If you are an auditory learner, use an audio recorder to start speaking about anything that comes to your mind about the topic.
    5. Have fun with your thoughts and ideas no matter how you gather them.
    6. Your paper may look like a mess of ideas at the beginning but this is okay because after brainstorming the next step is to start creating and outline and organizing
