PREPARE
- Gather Materials- Paper, pen/pencil or audio recorder if voice brainstorming
- Seek Support- Seek support from your teacher, tutor, parent or peer as needed.
APPLY
- When you have to start an essay or writing assignment, sometimes starting is the hardest part. Start with some general brainstorming using the following steps:
- Consider the general purpose of the topic and try to answer the 5 W questions (who, what, when, where, why)
- Allow as many ideas to come out of your head without thinking about them or whether they are right or wrong.
- If you are a visual learner, start by drawing an image in the middle of the page and then draw branches from the image to brainstorm your ideas.
- If you are an auditory learner, use an audio recorder to start speaking about anything that comes to your mind about the topic.
- Have fun with your thoughts and ideas no matter how you gather them.
- Your paper may look like a mess of ideas at the beginning but this is okay because after brainstorming the next step is to start creating and outline and organizing
