Dr. Lee’s job as veterinarian is unique. She and her staff work at a government animal quarantine center. Their goal is to guard against harmful, perhaps deadly, animal diseases from entering the country.
“Each day presents a challenge,” said Dr. Lee. “One day we take blood samples from lions and tigers. On another day we might inspect domestic and exotic birds to see if they are carriers of lethal viruses. Allowing just one creature with an infectious disease to pass through our center could be tragic. It might cause an epidemic, which could kill thousands of birds and animals.”
