Frequently Asked Questions
What is this research all about?
We have developed a prototype web and mobile assessment tool to increase student motivation and reduce teacher workload. We are providing teachers grades 6-10 the opportunity to test this tool as part of a research study. The time requirement is 1.5 hours for a teacher and 1.75 hours for a student. In appreciation for participation a teacher will receive a $50 Amazon gift card and students will receive a 1-in-20 chance to win a $25 Amazon Card and 1-in-300 chance at a prize worth $100 – $300.
What is Study Smart and why this assessment tool?
Study Smart is an online diagnostic assessment tool different from other assessments that focus solely on what students learn while our assessment considers what motivates students and what is getting in the way of learning.
This assessment saves teacher time by identifying core math and literacy skills, conveying how individual students learn, and what motivates each. We make the task of learning about your students extremely efficient, reducing the time to familiarize yourself with the class from months to days! The best thing about Study Smart is that student’s will tell you about themselves. No work is required by the teacher. Also included are lessons plans, a class profile, personalized learning plan for each student, and universal instructional strategies.
Study Smart believes that students are motivated to learn by having voice, choice and accountability of their learning. Students share with their teacher their strengths, challenges, interests and learning preferences through a series of short quizzes and engaging activities.
How many people can participate?
Although we would like to test the tool with as many teachers and students as possible, there is a limit due to our current resources. Also, we are restricted to certain criteria for research purposes. Everyone is considered on a first come, first serve basis.
When is the study?
The first phase of the progress will continue until June 2024 and the second phase will be conducted September through November 2024. Selected teachers can involve all students in the class who would like to participate. A student may complete the assessment all at once or in smaller pieces. Teachers will review the results of the assessment(s) and participate in an online interview.
Do I need approval to participate or do you have approval?
We have approval from several school districts in PEI, New Brunswick and Ontario. We will be requesting approval from other districts and the principals from teachers who express interest.
Can I test the tool without being part of the research?
Study Smart would like to have the tool available to everyone however we must validate the results of this test and make refinements based on feedback. Conversely, if you prefer to wait until the research is done, we will use your contact information and let you know when Study Smart is ready for public distribution.
